TikTok unveiled a set of AI-powered agentic commerce and advertising products on October 5, 2026, in an announcement on its newsroom timed to Advertising Week New York 2026, led by a one-click in-app checkout called Buy Direct and a conversational Shopping Assistant for product discovery.
The company said the new Agentic Commerce shopping experiences are being built with commerce platforms and payment providers including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe. David Kaufman, TikTok’s global head of monetization product partnerships, said the suite brings together “AI, automation, and creativity to help advertisers improve performance while reducing effort.”
Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant
Buy Direct is an in-app checkout solution that lets users purchase products directly from a brand without leaving TikTok, including purchases made from the For You feed with one click. According to a TikTok for Business blog post published the same day, the native checkout experience includes seamless loading, one-click purchasing through stored payment methods and saved addresses, and in-app order tracking. Brands remain the Merchant of Record for Buy Direct transactions. The solution requires an integration with the Universal Commerce Protocol, a standardized set of rules that enables AI agents and merchant systems to work together.
TikTok describes Shopping Assistant as a conversational AI agent that guides users through their shopping journey, saying it understands context, remembers user needs, and finds relevant products. Built into several TikTok touchpoints, the assistant provides real-time guidance on product details, shipping, sizing, availability, and purchasing within one conversation, according to the company. The business blog describes the mechanics: a chat window appears on the product page within TikTok’s in-app browser, where shoppers can ask questions and receive AI-powered answers based on information provided by the merchant. Shoppers can then continue to checkout on the merchant’s site while remaining inside TikTok’s in-app browser.
Lead Agent and Testing Availability
The announcement also introduced Agentic Leads, an AI agent for lead generation that uses AI-guided conversations to capture, qualify, and convert consumer prospects. The solution will be available across multiple surfaces, including Lead Agent in TikTok Direct Message and Lead Agent in lead forms on advertiser-owned websites. According to the business blog, advertisers begin by building a customizable Knowledge Base of brand-approved information, such as offering details, FAQs, and eligibility requirements, and then define which questions are most important for qualification. The agent answers questions using that material, gathers qualification details as the conversation develops, and collects contact information with appropriate consent. TikTok’s agentic solutions are available through eligibility-based testing, with interested advertisers directed to their TikTok sales partner to determine eligibility and setup.
TikTok Ad Network and Campaign Automation
TikTok introduced TikTok Ad Network (TTAN) to US advertisers, extending campaigns beyond the core app to what the company describes as a premium network of nearly 400,000 apps worldwide. TTAN is fully integrated into TikTok Ads Manager and includes built-in brand safety and placement controls. A separate TikTok for Business post published the same day states that TTAN, the company’s global ad network formerly known as Pangle, is now generally available for advertisers targeting the US.
The TikTok for Business Model Context Protocol (MCP), built on the open Model Context Protocol standard, allows developers to build AI agents and tools directly on top of the TikTok Ads ecosystem to plan, launch, and manage advertising workflows. The MCP is now available as a connector across Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake, Tencent WorkBuddy, and the IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry. TikTok reported a more than 200% increase in advertisers using its MCP for campaign activation and management since launch, citing internal data from July through September 2026. George Velonias, head of growth marketing at Wayfair Canada, said in the announcement that “the TikTok MCP is indispensable to our AI-powered campaign workflows including how we build campaigns, upload creative, and analyze performance.”
The announcement also detailed updates to TikTok’s automated advertising products. Search Ads Campaign, powered by Smart+, automates search ads across keywords and creative, with keyword targeting, bidding capabilities, and search budget management. Smart+ Creative Selection brings advertisers’ own assets, Symphony’s AI-generated creatives, and creator content into one approval workflow, surfacing recommended groups of creatives matched to the business and campaign objective while advertisers keep control of what goes live. TikTok said GMV Max, its TikTok Shop automated ad solution that automates campaign creation and directs spend toward content that is performing well, will also factor in business costs including affiliate commissions, coupons, and referral fees so advertisers can optimize for what the company describes as a true return on investment.
As context for the updates, the announcement cited figures from two external reports. PF Global’s TikTok Economic Impact Report, published the week before the announcement, found that economic activity on TikTok helped generate $81 billion in GDP for US businesses and that 54 million Americans purchased a product after watching a TikTok video, according to the figures TikTok cited. Kantar’s Media Reactions 2026 report ranked TikTok as the top platform where marketers plan to increase ad spend in 2027, with 84% of marketers placing advertising on TikTok, the company said.
